In Imperial China, the actors’ social status was no higher than that of the prostitutes. The thirteen-year-old Mei Lanfang followed in his grandfather’s footsteps to become a male Peking opera performer who specialized in playing female roles. His uncle opposed his choice and urged him to quit the profession. He could foresee the trouble lying ahead for a man who acted as a woman on the stage. However, Mei later becomes the most famous opera singer in China.
