二戰期間日本殖民下的台灣農村，身為佃農的兩兄弟好不容易躲過了徵兵，耕牛則難逃被日軍徵收作成牛肉罐頭，地主又有意將田地轉賣，田牛兩失的兄弟倆眼看生活陷入困境，天上卻掉下意外禮物而因禍得福。文英在片中飾演刻苦持家的大嫂，內斂展現台灣婦女堅毅的生命力，也成為貧瘠生活的一面鏡子，讓她首度入圍金馬獎最佳女配角。

During the last years of Japanese occupation in Taiwan, as tenants from the preceding generation, the family of Chan brothers was suffering from poor harvest. One day, a heavy unexploded bomb fell down from the sky on their farmland. They decided to bring the bomb to the Japanese police as a "gift for the Emperor of Japan". Unfortunately, the Japanese were not appreciative. After they throw away the bomb into the sea, an unexpected gift fell and made them still believe that God is fair.
