Mary is a portly eight-year-old girl. Max is a middle-aged Jewish New Yorker suffering from Asperger's Syndrome. They seem to have little in common, but the unlikely pen pals begin to exchange letters discussing everything from taxidermy, trust, pets, religion, obesity, autism, agoraphobia, alcoholism.
