戰爭過後，家道中落的江南宅院裡住著一對貌合神離的夫妻。一名不速之客攪亂一池春水，他既是男主人多年好友，又是女主人的初戀情人，加上對他情竇初開的主人妹妹、僕人老黃，五人之間勾扯出難解情結。本片乃田壯壯重拍費穆1948年的同名經典作，也是李屏賓首度和大陸導演合作，他的光影如詩如畫，帶有淡如水墨、暗處生情的味道。

Liyan and Yuwen live in post-war torpor, childless but with Liyan's school-aged sister, and sleep in separate rooms. A surprise visit from Liyan's boyhood friend Zhang, a big city physician, wakes up the household. To Zhang's amazement, he discovers Yuwen is his own youthful sweetheart. Will he accept an arranged marriage of Zhang's 16-year-old sister? or simply ending the affair and embracing vitality?
