The Killing of a Chinese Bookie is the story of Cosmo Vitelli, an ordinary man, who has constructed his life as many American men do. He has defined himself in terms of his work. When threatened with the loss of his way of life, he refuses to borrow money again in order to save it. He knows that he could never receive, in exchange for his entire world that it costs him to build it.
