台灣電影史上恐怕再難找出比本片更晦暗的愛情電影，也是宋存壽後期作品成就最高的一部。銀幕形象一向賢淑恭良的林鳳嬌，飾演韌性堅強的傳統舊女性，沈默地用奉獻代替追求。然而宋存壽的鏡頭卻挖掘出她掙扎於理念與慾念的剛烈內向，如何被現實所擊潰，而自行撚熄生存的火焰，突破當時文藝愛情的類型潮流，直指愛情複雜性的深幽境界。

The actress Lin Fung-Giu plays the part of a courageous woman of tradition. The act of pursuit is replaced by a solemn devotion manifesting as a silent determination. Eventually, she finds herself being defeated by reality, and consequently snuffs out her own passion for life. At the time when the romantic genre is dominated by a superficial idealism, this particular film by Sung Chuen-Sau would break the tradition and point out a deeper, sophisticated, and more mysterious realm of love.
